Underdonk Gallery is pleased to present the sculpture of Rolf Jacobsen. Chthonic refers to the mythological underworld, which is used here by the artist as an analogy for a subconscious image. The title’s Greek root – khtkonios- literally means “of the Earth.” These sculptures, made of limbs and roots, are pulled from the earth and are chosen for their forms that evoke a gesture or a movement.Rolf’s process involves cutting and breaking and eventually reconfiguring and mending with gauze and plaster. These pieces are a metamorphosis captured mid-transition. At once figurative and feral, they draw on the organic harmonies of nature to imbue the still image with tension.
