Fur Cup
Underdonk is pleased to present ‘Fur Cup’ a group exhibition of sculptural work that brings together thirty artists using a variety of materials, such as glass, wood, clay, paper mache, found objects, plaster, metal, fabric, and plastic. The container or vessel is either open or closed; it can be functional or hold matter, or it can be open and occupy space.
The show’s title makes reference to Meret Oppenheim’s ‘Object’, made in 1936, a work which utilizes a fur-covered cup, saucer, and spoon. This exhibition gains inspiration from its use of somewhat contradictory juxtapositions of association, soft and hard, animal and object, sensual and utilitarian, to create an uncanny everyday object. It brings forth the idea of layering against the outside elements, a material that covers the body.
While there is a wide range of sculpture in “Fur Cup”, all hold true to the idea of an open or closed form that combines formal qualities into unusual arrangements: geometric and gestural, homemade, and factory-made, transparent and opaque, opulent and sci-fi, functional and non-functional, real and unreal, printed and handmade, ornate and natural. Because of these artists’ unique transformation of form, these works bring into question what’s possible in a state of reckoning beyond binary oppositions.
This exhibition includes the following artists: Inna Babaeva, Leilah Babirye, Amie Cunat, Julie Curtiss, Rachelle Dang, Rachel Domm, Sharif Farrag, Priscilla Fusco, Celia Gerard, Ann/drew Gayle, Sue Havens, Roxanne Jackson, Julia Kunin, Heidi Lau, Leonora Loeb, Amanda Martinez, Jasmine Murrell, Mónica Palma, Courtney Puckett, Anna Sew Hoy, Stephanie H. Shih, Deirdre Swords, Rebecca Murtaugh, Leah Tacha, Christina Tenaglia, Karen Tepaz, Gabriela Vainsencher, Guy Walker, Patrice Renee Washington, Lu Zhang, curated by Elisa Soliven.
